Tampa Best Hospitals in the US

That’s what the 25th annual ranking of the Best Hospitals in America revealed from U.S. News & World Report. The highly regarded digital magazine’s 2014-15 report identified Tampa General Hospital placing second out of 265 hospitals in Florida.

In addition across the state,  Moffitt Cancer Center (Tampa) ranked sixth.

The Best Hospitals rankings are updated every July. Hospitals are grouped into 16 individual specialty lists. Most of the rankings are based on death rates for patients who represent especially challenging cases, patient safety and other measures of performance that can be assessed using hard data. An annual reputational survey of physicians also is used, with doctors asked to name hospitals they consider the best in their specialty for difficult cases, is also used. Children’s hospitals are not included in the report.

Nationally, the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., topped the overall list, beating out Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Tampa General Hospital is ranked nationally in four adult specialties. It was also high performing in eight adult specialties. Tampa General is a 1,018-bed general medical and surgical facility with 40,522 admissions in the most recent year reported. It performed 13,513 annual inpatient and 14,221 outpatient surgeries. Its emergency room had 82,844 visits. Tampa General is also a teaching hospital and accredited by CARF.
